SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Sunday the “terrorist” act that targeted the Iraqi prime minister’s residence in Baghdad is a “dangerous” development threatening security and stability in the country.
Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an assassination attempt after his residence in Baghdad was attacked by a drone laden with explosives early on Sunday.
“I condemn the failed attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi,” Barzani said in a tweet.
“This terrorist act is a dangerous development that threatens security and stability in the country and portends dire consequences,” he added.
Barzani called on all sides to exercise “restraint and calm down”.
The Iraqi military said Kadhimi was in “good health”, but several members of his personnel protection were injured.
The Iraqi interior ministry said three drones targeted Kadhimi’s residence in Baghdad. Two of them were shot down by the security forces, while the third hit the house, it added.
Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned “in the strongest terms” the drone attack.
“We stand with him and reaffirm our support for his efforts to consolidate democracy, the rule of law and stability for the country,” he said in a tweet.
Earlier, the United States condemned the attack, offering assistance with the investigation.
“This apparent act of terrorism, which we strongly condemn, was directed at the heart of the Iraqi state,” spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
“We are in close touch with the Iraqi security forces charged with upholding Iraq’s sovereignty and independence and have offered our assistance as they investigate this attack.”
