SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Former Kirkuk governor Najmadin Karim died of a stroke at a hospital in the United States, his office said in a statement on Saturday.
Director of Karim’s press office Nashwan Jalal told Esta Media Network that the former governor passed away at 11 p.m. (U.S. time) on Friday.
On Wednesday, his office said Karim had suffered a stroke a few days go and that he was hospitalized in the United States.
Najmadin Karim was Kirkuk governor from 2011 to 2017. He left Kirkuk to Erbil in October 2017 when Iraqi forces alongside Hashid al-Shaabi launched an operation to retake the province from the Kurdish forces in the wake of the independence referendum.
