SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two members of Islamic State (ISIS) were arrested in Kirkuk province, Iraqi intelligence agency said on Wednesday.
Iraqi Agency of Intelligence and Federal Investigation said its units had detained two militants in Rashad district in southwest of Kirkuk in accordance with Article 4 of anti-terrorism law.
“The terrorists provided logistic support to ISIS elements in the so-called Kirkuk state,” the agency said in a statement.
On Tuesday, spokesman of Joint Operations Command Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji said Iraqi forces detained three ISIS members in Kirkuk. They carried out 14 “terrorist operations” against security forces in the province, according to Khafaji.
Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Anbar and Baghdad. The security forces have detained and killed dozens of ISIS members in the past weeks.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
