SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Turkey said on Sunday two special operations police officers were killed in an attack in northern Syria.

Turkey’s interior ministry said the People’s Protection Units (YPG) attacked an armored vehicle with a guided missile in Azaz town.

One officer was killed in the attack and three others were wounded, the ministry added. Another officer succumbed to his injuries, it stated.

Turkey has been carrying out operations against the YPG fighters in northern Syria and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Kurdistan Region.

Ankara backs rebels trying to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad backed by Russia and Iran. Turkey seized control of some northern border towns in recent years with cross border incursions to push back the YPG, which Ankara views as a terrorist group.
