Iraqi security forces arrest three ‘terrorists’ in Kirkuk

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces arrested three “terrorists” responsible for targeting security forces in Kirkuk province, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.

Spokesman of Joint Operations Command Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji said the three “terrorists” were detained in a “specific operation” as they were caught in act.

The three were responsible for planting explosive devices against police and security services in the province, Khafaji added.

“The terrorists were responsible for more than 14 terrorist operations that took place in Kirkuk,” he said.

Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Anbar and Baghdad. The security forces have detained and killed dozens of ISIS members in the past weeks.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
