SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Secretary General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars Ali al-Qaradaghi expressed his support for the Taliban and Afghanistan.
A delegation from the IUMS met with officials in the Taliban politburo in Doha on Saturday, after the Taliban took over Afghanistan following the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
“We support our brothers and do not let them down,” Qaradaghi said in a tweet, referring to the Taliban.
Hiba Press cited al-Qaradaghi as saying that “everyone is very happy with the victories of the Taliban, which are victories of all Muslims, and have brought joy to the hearts of Muslims”.
The Taliban ruled Afghanistan according to their strict interpretation of Islamic law from 1996-2001 and were toppled in an invasion led by the United States, which accused them of sheltering militants behind the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
They swept back to power last month in a lightning advance as the last U.S.-led NATO troops pulled out and the forces of the Western-backed government melted away.
