SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces and Hashid al-Shaabi have arrested three senior Islamic State (ISIS) members in the country, they said on Tuesday.

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said its units had detained a senior ISIS member in Nahr Safi area in north of Baghdad, according to state news agency INA.

Another ISIS militant was detained in south of Baghdad, the PMF added.

Separately, the Iraqi military said units from the federal intelligence and investigation agency arrested an ISIS leader who “participated in many attacks against the security forces and citizens”.

Iraqi security forces have increased operations against ISIS militants across the country, as the militant group continues to attack security forces in disputed territories claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil.

In 2017 Baghdad announced victory over the militant group, and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.

The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
