SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Erbil closed eight oil refineries for violating environmental and health regulations, the mayor’s office said on Monday.

In a statement, the Erbil central district said the closure of the refineries was part of a campaign launched to close down facilities that violate the regulations.

The eight refineries are located on the Erbil-Gwer road, west of the Region’s capital, according to the statement.

“The reason of their closure was due to their violation of the regulations, polluting environment and disease spread, which have disturbed residents,” it said.

It added that the campaign would continue to close down refineries that violate the instructions.

Earlier this month, three other refineries were closed for violating the regulations.
