Iraqi military thwarts ISIS attack in Makhmour, says officer

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi military thwarted an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in Makhmour district southwest of Erbil late on Wednesday, an officer told Esta Media Network.

An Iraqi military officer in Makhmour said a group of ISIS militants attacked a military point near Grd Qoshana village between Makhmour and Qaraj on Wednesday night.

“The Iraqi soldiers responded and foiled the attack, and ISIS militants escaped,” the officer added.

One soldier was slightly injured, the officer noted, saying that three ISIS militants were also wounded.

In 2017 Baghdad announced victory over the militant group, and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.

The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
