SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-president Bafel Talabani said on Saturday the whole forces would be reorganized in stages, as the party continues to make changes in Sulaimani province.
Talabani visited the headquarters of the counter-terrorism service, commando brigade and golden forces on Saturday to overlook their training closely, his office said in a statement.
“We will reorganize all the forces in several stages and their structure will be formed again on the basis of being national and protecting the Region’s security,” Talabani said.
“From now on, the PUK forces will be forces of people and Kurdistan and be at the level of national responsibility, and they should carry out their tasks in the framework of law and public interests,” he added.
Talabani stressed that they would not allow the security forces to be “mixed with political affairs and be used for personal purposes in any way,” the statement read.
“Anyone who broke the law, used the PUK forces for private works and was involved in illegal acts will be brought to justice,” he noted.
Talabani also attended a military parade of the security forces who were trained and prepared in cooperation with the U.S.-led Coalition forces, according to the statement.
Regarding the unification of Peshmerga forces, Talabani said the PUK was ready to make “this national step succeed” and that the party “wants to succeed this process on the basis of balance and specialties of the forces,” the statement said.
