Deputy PM says there will be ‘no danger’ to press freedom in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said on Friday there will be “no danger” to freedom of the press in Sulaimani province.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) deputy premier met with a team from Sulaimani-branch of the Kurdistan Journalists’ Syndicate, Metro Center for Journalists’ Rights and Advocacy and Hawlati newspaper in Sulaimani.

Talabani and the team discussed the state of journalism, freedom of expression and publications, the deputy premier’s office said in a statement.

Talabani assured the team that there would be “no danger to freedom of the press in Sulaimani and no journalists would face accountability”, the statement read.

Regarding the closure of some channels and Facebook pages, Talabani said those who worked for the media outlets would not be unemployed or face expulsion.
