SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces destroyed four sites belonging to Islamic State (ISIS) militant group in Kirkuk, the army said on Monday.

The security forces alongside a unit of intelligence agency launched a “security and intelligence” operation from three directions in Kirkuk province, Iraqi security media cell said in a statement.

The forces destroyed three hideouts and a camp belonging to the militant group during the operation, which also carried out in Wadi al-Kur, it added.

The operation comes as ISIS remnants have increased attacks against the Iraqi forces in Kirkuk.

Several members of the security forces had been killed in ISIS attacks in the province in the past weeks.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
