U.S. condemns drone attack in Kurdistan Region

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil on Saturday condemned a drone attack in the Kurdistan Region.

“The United States condemns Saturday’s drone attack in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. This attack represents a clear violation of Iraqi sovereignty,” the consulate said in a tweet.

Earlier, Esta Media Network reporter said the sound of several explosions was heard in Bragh village on the road between Erbil and Pirmam at dawn on Saturday.

The village is located near the new building of the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, which has not been completed yet.

There is still no official statement from the Kurdish authorities regarding the attack.

Iranian media reported one of the explosive-laden drones exploded near Khanzad hotel in Pirmam district, 57 kilometers from the city center of Erbil.

Headquarters of Masoud Barzani, former president of the Kurdistan Region and leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), is also located in Pirmam.

No groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks, but armed groups that some Iraqi officials say are backed by Iran have claimed similar incidents in other Iraqi provinces.

U.S. officials blame Iran-backed militias for regular rocket attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq, including near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
