Kurdistan to record highest temperature this week: directorate

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities warned on Friday temperatures would rise to their highest in the Kurdistan Region this week.

The General Directorate of Meteorology and Seismology said temperatures could rise to 49 degrees Celsius (120 °F) in some areas in the Region.

“It is forecast that the highest temperatures will be recorded between Monday and Thursday,” the directorate said in a statement.

“It could reach 44-49 degrees Celsius in city centers and areas in Garmian [administration],” it added.

In general, Iraq is in the middle of a heatwave with temperatures rising above 50 degrees (122 Fahrenheit) during the day.

Last week, authorities in Sulaimani warned residents to avoid exerting themselves outdoors unless necessary due to a heat wave hitting the province.

Sulaimani Center District called on residents to stay in their homes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and should only go out when it is necessary.
