SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement Evan Faiek Gabro rejected the forced return from the U.S. of Iraqi asylum seekers who have yet to obtained citizenship there, Iraqi media reported on Wednesday.

Gabro accompanied by a delegation met with U.S. officials in Washington, national Iraqi news agency (NINA) cited the Iraqi migration and displacement ministry as saying.

The Iraqi minister discussed with the U.S. officials the issue of forced return of Iraqis whose applications were rejected in the United States, NINA reported.

“The Iraqi ministry and government in general stand against forcing refugees to return regardless of the circumstances, especially since the Iraqis have suffered and endured a lot in order to obtain asylum,” she was quoted as saying.

She stressed the need to improve mechanisms to deal with the case of Iraqi asylum seekers, according to NINA.
