Turkish warplanes bomb vehicle in village north of Sulaimani, casualties reported

Black smoke rises after Turkey bombs a site in the village of Galala, north of Sulaimani, June 19, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Turkish warplanes on Saturday bombed a vehicle in Galala village in the Kurdistan Region’s district of Mawat, north of Sulaimani, a local official told Esta Media Network.

Kamaran Hassan, mayor of Mawat, said the air strike hit the village, but caused no casualties among the villagers.

“A civil vehicle of the PKK guerrillas was targeted and there are casualties,” he added.

Last week, another Turkish strike targeted a vehicle carrying four people in Pishdar district, north of Sulaimani.

According to a local official, they were members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey has taken its decades-old conflict with the PKK deep into the Kurdistan Region, establishing military bases and deploying armed military drones against the fighters in their mountain strongholds.

Most of the operations have focused on territory up to 30 km (20 miles) from the border.
