PUK co-president proposes ‘national dialogue’ between political parties

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Tuesday proposed dialogue between the parties to reach agreement on the issues.

Talabani, who visited the Iraqi capital on Saturday, met with Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Mohammed al-Halbousi in Baghdad on Tuesday.

Talabani proposed during the meeting “national dialogue between all the parties to reach agreement and understanding,” his office said in a statement.

“The logic of majority and minority should no loner be used to treat each other and this logic should not be a measure for passing laws because it complicates the situation,” Talabani was quoted as saying.

“We should all believe in writing a new policy for running Iraq and the constitution should be the basis of relations, and no nations should be ignored,” he added.

On Tuesday, Talabani also met with Falih al-Fayyadh, head of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), in Baghdad.

Both sides stressed on cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi forces to fight Islamic State (ISIS) militants and to secure the area, a statement said.

“ISIS is till a serious threat and we have to all cooperate and coordinate. It is our national and patriotic duty to provide a secure and stable life for people,” Talabani said.

“The activation of joint rooms between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces is a factor of more stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” he added.

Talabani is expected to hold talks with several other political leaders on Wednesday.
