SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) fighter was killed in an ambush by Islamic State (ISIS) in Khanaqin district on Monday, a Kurdish official said.
The Iraqi military and PMF fighters carried out an operation against ISIS militants in the villages of Mekhas and Shafiq, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) office in Khanaqin Azad Mohammed told Esta Media Network.
ISIS militants ambushed a unit of the PMF, also known as Hashid al-Shaabi, during the operation, Mohammed said.
One PMF fighter was killed and three others were wounded, he added.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
