PUK co-president meets Iraqi prime minister in Baghdad

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Baghdad on Sunday, stressing the importance of consensus between the political parties.

The PUK co-president visited Baghdad on Saturday to hold talks with senior officials and political leaders in the Iraqi capital.

In his meeting with Kadhimi, both sides emphasized commitment to the Iraqi constitution to resolve issues and overcome political, economic and security challenges, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

They also stressed on an appropriate mechanism for sending the Region’s financial entitlements in accordance with the budget law for 2021, the statement read.

Talabani stressed on strengthening relations and cooperation between the institutions of the federal government and the Kurdistan Region in order to succeed steps for service and reform in governance, according to the statement.

He also called on the prime minister to ensure that the Region’s financial entitlement and people’s livings are not linked to political issues and that an agreement between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad will become a reference to resolving all the issues, according to the statement.

Talabani also stressed “the importance of consensus between the political parties in order to provide a decent and prosperous life for the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, who have suffered from consecutive problems,” the statement cited him as saying.

Earlier on Sunday, the PUK co-leader held talks with Iraqi President Barham Salih, Al-Hikma Movement leader Ammar al-Hamik, and Head of State of law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki during his visit.

He also met with head of al-Fateh Alliance Hadi al-Amiri following his meeting with Kadhimi.
