SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Peshmerga forces backed by the U.S.-led Coalition forces launched an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Kifri district on Tuesday, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Vice President Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa said a unit of Golden Forces of the Peshmerga’s Commando brigade conducted an anti-ISIS operation in revenge of Peshmerga officers killed in a recent attack by the militants in Diyala province.

“The special units of the Golden Forces, under the supervision of the special forces of Coalition-France and backed by Brigade 144, the brave Peshmerga forces cleared a large area of Daesh in the Kawer Kawa-Dawe area,” Sheikh Mustafa said in a post to his Facebook page.

The Kurdish official said a number of ISIS militants were killed and several hideouts were destroyed during the operation.

The operation came after ISIS militants attacked the Peshmerga forces in Zinan sub-district near Kifri on May 11.

A member of the Peshmerga forces was wounded in the attack and later died in hospital.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
