Turkey says two bases in southeast attacked by ‘model aircraft’

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Turkish defense ministry said on Friday that two military bases in Turkey’s southeast were attacked by “model aircraft”, one day after another base in Diyarbakir was attacked by a drone.

“An attempt was made to attack our unmanned aerial systems base in Batman and the 23rd Infantry Division base in Sirnak with model aircraft,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

There no casualties or damages in the attack, it added.

Meanwhile, the governor’s office in Batman said three model planes were used by “terrorists” to attack a UAV base in the province at around 11:10 p.m. on Thursday.

“All model planes used were neutralized and no casualties were reported,” it added.

The People’s Defense Forces (HPG), the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) military wing, said it had bombed a military base and several military centers in Batman, following a similar attack on an air base in Diyarbakir.

PKK-affiliated media reported on Wednesday that a military air base was the group had attacked a military air base by a drone in Diyarbakir late on Tuesday.

The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, focused in southeast Turkey.
