SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Turkey said on Sunday it had carried out airstrikes against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, where it launched a military operation against the group.

The Turkish Defense Ministry said three PKK fighters were “neutralized” in a successful air operation in Gara region, northeast of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region.

“Our fight against terrorism continues effectively and decisively,” Turkish state news agency Anadolu quoted the defense ministry as saying.

Turkish officials often use the term “neutralize” in statements about attacks on PKK fighters, without giving precise details. It is generally understood to mean that they were killed, captured or wounded.

Turkey regularly carries out air and ground attacks against the PKK in northern Iraq. It says neither the Iraqi government nor the Kurdish government has taken measures to combat the group.

Turkey launched a new ground and air defensive against the PKK fighters in Duhok province last month. The Turkish military has entered more than 10 kilometers deep into the Kurdistan Region. It also set up four new military points in Duhok province.

The Turkish military has established a dozen military bases in the Kurdistan Region’s border areas with Turkey as part of a military campaign against the PKK.
