SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces have recently detained an Islamic State (ISIS) member in Chamchamal, west of Sulaimani, the U.S.-led Coalition forces said on Thursday.
Coalition Spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said the Kurdish Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) had detained a “Daesh terrorist” in Chamchamal, which enabled “a deeper understanding of the Daesh terrorist network”.
He used an Arabic acronym for Islamic State militants.
“This new information on Daesh terrorists and operations in the region will assist in the #defeatdaesh mission,” Marotto said in a tweet.
Marotto added that the Coalition train and advise partnership with the CTG is focused solely on the mission to defeat ISIS militants.
“The removal of Daesh leadership is a focus for the Global Coalition,” he tweeted.
In April, the Kurdish security forces detained 22 ISIS suspects in Sulaimani and its surrounding areas, according the Region’s Asayish Agency.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
