Schools remain closed in Kurdistan Region amid surge in COVID-19 cases

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region will keep schools closed as daily coronavirus cases continue to rise, an official said early on Monday.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Supreme Committee to Combat Coronavirus ordered the closure of schools on March 30, as part of measures to curb COVID-19 outbreak.

Spokesman of Health Ministry said there was no new decision to reopen schools in the Kurdistan Region, rejecting rumors that in-person classes would resume.

“No decision has been made yet and such rumors are incorrect,” he said in a statement.

Kurdish health officials have warned that the Kurdistan Region is facing a “dangerous phase” of the coronavirus pandemic, urging people to follow the health guidelines designed to curb the virus spread.

The Kurdistan Region had recorded more than 146,000 COVID-19 cases as of Sunday, including 3,959 deaths, according to the health ministry.
