SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday met with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Erbil.
Aboul Gheit arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday evening and was welcomed by Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed at Erbil International Airport.
The Kurdish premier and Arab league chief discussed the latest developments in Iraq and relations between the Kurdistan Region and Arab countries, according to a KRG statement.
Aboul Gheit hailed the Kurdistan Region’s role and position that has seen economic progress, the statement read.
He said his visit to the Region was a “message to Arab countries that they need to develop their relations with the Kurdistan Region in the framework of Iraqi federal, particularly in trade exchange,” the KRG said.
Barzani, for his part, hoped the Arab League would play its “important role in tackling piled issues in Iraq”.
“The Kurdistan Region hopes to have the best relationship with Arab countries,” Barzani was cited as saying.
Before his visit to the Region, Aboul Gheit visited Baghdad and met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, President Barham Salih and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
