Saudi-led coalition intercepts Houthi drone launched towards Saudi Arabia – state media

UAV-X drone flown by Yemen’s Huthi rebels is seen in Hodeidah, Yemen.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Saudi-led military coalition intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Iran-aligned group towards the southern Saudi Arabia city of Khamis Mushait, state media reported on Sunday.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a tweet that two drones were fired at military hangers in Jazan airport in the south of the kingdom and a military air base in Khamis Mushait, according to Reuters.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 against the Houthis after the movement ousted the internationally recognized government from the capital Sanaa.

Coalition spokesperson Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki said on Friday that the militia continued its hostile attempts to target civilians in the Kingdom, which should be considered as a “war crime”.

He further said the coalition was taking operational measures to protect civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The United Nations and the United States have stepped up diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire deal, which Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s government backed by Riyadh have welcomed. The Houthis are pushing for the full lifting of the coalition’s sea and air blockade on areas the group controls.
