SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The head of New Generation bloc in the Kurdistan parliament was prevented from entering the parliament’s building on Wednesday, after he threw his shoes at the legislature’s dais.
Kazim Faruq threw his shoes at the Kurdistan parliament’s dais on March 31 following a disagreement over the session’s agenda, criticizing that it did not reflect people’s priorities.
Majority of lawmakers voted to exclude Faruq from future sessions of the Kurdistan Region or committee meetings until he apologized. Seventy-three lawmakers voted in favor.
Faruq told reporters on Wednesday that the parliament’s guards prevented him from entering the building.
“I am representative of people and I have come to participate in today’s parliament’s session, but police told me that the parliament’s presidency had given them secret order to prevent me [from entering the building,” he said.
“They must wait until Judgement Day for me to apologize” for throwing his shoes, Faruq added.
The lawmaker further said there was no provision in the parliament’s by-laws that would deny him access to the building.
