SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained a senior Islamic State (ISIS) member in south of Mosul, said a military spokesman on Thursday.

The security forces detained an ISIS emir in an operation in Ain Al-Jahsh, south of Mosul city, said Yehia Rasool, spokesman for commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces.

“Through continuous follow-up, scrutiny and collecting information, the counter-terrorism service was able to arrest the so-called Emir of Tigris Sector, recently appointed after the killing of the former emir,” Rasool said in a statement.

Recently, Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Nineveh, Anbar and Baghdad. The security forces have detained and killed dozens of ISIS members in the past months.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”
