SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An improvised explosive device (IED) killed one Hashid al-Shaabi fighter in the Hamrin mountain range in Diyala province, Iraqi media reported on Sunday.
Two other members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) were also wounded in the explosion which occurred while the unit was on patrol in the area in northeast of Baquba, a security source told National Iraqi News Agency.
Meanwhile, Shafaq News reported that three Hashid al-Shaabi fighters were injured.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
Iraqi F-16 fighter jets carried out 19 airstrikes against the militants in the Hamrin mountain range last week, destroying a number of caves and hideouts, according to the premier’s spokesman.
