SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Russia has proposed Turkey to reopen three crossing points in Syria’s Idlib and Aleppo starting March 25 due to the difficult humanitarian situation in Syria, Russian authorities said on Tuesday.

Deputy chief of Russia’s center for Syrian reconciliation Alexander Karpov said it had proposed Turkey to reopen Saraqib and Miznas crossing points Idlib and Abu Zeydin point in Aleppo.

Since the outbreak of the Syria conflict in March 2011, it’s estimated that at least 500,000 people have been killed. Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad now again control around two thirds of the nation’s territory.

In July 2020, the security council approved aid deliveries to Syria through one border crossing from Turkey.

The U.N. Security Council authorized cross-border aid operation into Syria in 2014, including access from Jordan and Iraq. Those crossings were cut in January due to opposition by Russia and China.

Russia has vetoed 16 council resolutions related to Syria since Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on protesters in 2011, leading to civil war. For many of those votes, Moscow has been backed in the council by China.
