SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least 10 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, authorities said.

The shooting took place at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, a north-central Colorado city at the eastern foot of the Rockies, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of Denver, Reuters reported.

Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said 10 people including a police officer died in the attack. The 51-year-old policeman was the first officer to respond to the shooting, she noted.

“This is a tragedy and a nightmare for Boulder County,” Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a news conference, according to AP.

“These were people going about their day, doing their shopping. I promise the victims and the people of the state of Colorado that we will secure justice.”

Colorado has been the scene of some of the most shocking mass shootings in modern U.S. history.

The attack was the seventh mass killing this year in the United States, following the March 16 shooting that left eight people dead at three Atlanta-area massage businesses, AP said.
