Thousands of people expected to participate in Newroz celebration in Qandil

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Thousands of people are expected to gather in the Kurdistan Region’s Qandil mountain to celebrate Newroz on Sunday.

A supervisor of the celebration told Esta Media Network that thousands of people from Sulaimani and other areas would participate in the celebration in the Qandil mountain.

“Dozens of people will arrive in Qandil from Garmian administration today, and many others from Sulaimani and Raparin administration will visit tomorrow,” said the supervisor, who spoke under condition of anonymity.

Thousands of people from the Kurdistan Region visit Qandil every year to celebrate Newroz and to show support for struggle of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Kurds in the Kurdistan Region, Iran, Turkey, Syria and the world celebrate Newroz with bonfires and dancing on March 20 every year. Newroz is the arrival of spring and new year in Kurdish culture.
