Resolution of Erbil-Baghdad issues in Baghdad, say PUK co-leaders

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani and Lahur Sheikh Jangi said on Monday resolution of issues between the Iraqi and Kurdish governments is in Baghdad. 

The PUK co-leaders met with French ambassador to Iraq Bruno Aubert and Consul-General to Erbil Oliver Decottignies in Sulaimani city.

The two sides discussed the latest political, economic and security developments as well as Iraq’s upcoming elections and ways to improve relations between both sides, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

The stressed the need for efforts to find solutions to pass the situation.

“The PUK co-leaders reiterated the party’s will to constitutionally solve the financial issues and the national cases,” the statement read.

“Today, resolution is in Baghdad, and for this we must resort to a common national language,” the co-leaders were quoted as saying.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has sent a high-level delegation to Baghdad several times in the past months to reach an agreement with the Iraqi government and parties over issues related to budget and oil.

Despite a series of meetings, Erbil and Baghdad have yet to reach a final agreement.
