SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region launched coronavirus vaccination campaign on Thursday, after receiving its first doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine from Baghdad.

Authorities in Erbil began the campaign on Thursday with vaccinating healthcare workers working at the coronavirus centers in the city.

The Region’s ministry of health ordered the distribution of the Sinopharm vaccine donated by the government of China to Iraq.

Iraq received its first 50,000 doses of the vaccine late on Monday. The doses will be offered to health workers, elderly people and members of the security forces first, according to the health ministry.

The Kurdistan Region received 5,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday.

Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said on Sunday that nearly 4,000 doses would be given to healthcare workers and the rest would be given to Chinese people at the request of China’s consulate.
