SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) office in Duhok condemned the detention of its member and several other people in the province.

The PUK office in Duhok said on Friday that the security forces had detained Haval Nazir, cadre of the PUK’s social affairs, in Darkar sub-district in Zakho over alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on Thursday.

“We condemn such kinds of detention, and we also condemn the arrests of the others who have been detained without a reason,” head of the PUK office Aras Mohammed Agha said.

“Badinan has become a place of political detention, and this is not acceptable,” he added, calling for the release of Nazir and other detainees.

“We are against such behavior and we hope it won’t be repeated,” the PUK official stated.

The Kurdish security forces in Duhok province have detained a number of activists and journalists in Duhok province.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani accused some of the detainees of being spies and intruders.

“Those who were detained are not journalists and activists. Some of them were spies of countries and some others attempted to explode buildings and places of foreigners in the Region,” Barzani said in a press conference, referring to diplomatic missions in the Region.
