SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained two Islamic State (ISIS) militants in coordination with Kurdish security forces in Sulaimani province, a military spokesman said late on Thursday.
Yehia Rasool, spokesman of commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, said counter-terrorism forces carried out a “new qualitative operation” in coordination with Asayish forces in Sulaimani province on Thursday.
The operation “resulted in the arrest of terrorists Abu Jarrah and Abu Shadad”, Rasool said in a tweet.
“One of whom acts as a detachment command and the other is among the supportive detachments,” he added.
The Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency announced the detention of two “terrorists” in Halabja province on Wednesday, but it didn’t give further details about them.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
