SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi army foiled an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in Kirkuk province on Saturday night, according to Iraqi media.
Citing security sources, some Iraqi media reported that a group of ISIS militants attacked Iraqi army stationed at a checkpoint in Zarga village in Daquq, south of Kirkuk.
The Iraqi military foiled the attack and killed four ISIS militants and destroyed a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), the sources said.
The military also seized a number of weapons and ammunition.
At least 10 ISIS militants were killed in a U.S.-led Coalition airstrike al-Tamur area in Kirkuk on Wednesday, according to the Iraqi military.
The Iraqi national intelligence service said its units had thwarted a “terrorist plot” that targeted Kirkuk governorate.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
