SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Migrants in a Greece camp call for assistance and aid as temperatures hit low, a group of volunteers said on Saturday night.

Moria Corona Awareness Team, a group of volunteers working in the camp, said in a post on Facebook that migrants were freezing due to low temperatures.

Voice of America reported that Kara Tepe Camp, sheltering more than 7,300 people, was flooded last week after heavy rains hit the area.

The camp replaced the burned-down Moria camp for displaced people and migrants on the Greek island of Lesbos.

“When we talk in the tent, our mouth steam is visible. The children are crying from the cold and their lips are red,” the group of volunteers in the camp said.

“There are no heaters and we cannot even make a fire, the wood is wet. The night will get colder and this [weather] they say will stay for three days.” The group added.

“We will all be sick soon and walking out all is wet.”

Head of Lutka Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Affairs Ari Jalal told said migrants at all the camps in Greece live in a “harsh condition” and that the Greek government “cannot control it”.

“The EU is even reckless and does not find a solution to the situation,” Jalal told Esta Media Network on Saturday.

Jalal further said that most of the migrants living in the camps are Iraqis and Syrians.

At least 596,273 Iraqis including people from the Kurdistan Region have migrated between 2015 and 2020, of which 251 had died and 173 have gone missing, according to the Lutka foundation.

“There are so many wet tents and not a single dry place to go … We are afraid many will get sick,” the Moria Corona Awareness Team said in another post on January 12.

“We have been alerted hundred times that the camp will get flooded this winter, unfortunately no one came in the ground and no one acts to rescue the camp from flooding. Now, we are certain that no one cares about our worst living condition,” the group said.
