SULAIMANI – (ESTA) Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan، met with Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) in Washington, DC. Representative Quigley is a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, which, among other things, funds US Department of Defense training and equipping of Peshmerga forces. He served previously on the Intelligence Committee. Rep. Quigley is also a member of the Kurdish American Congressional Caucus and is a longtime friend of the Kurds. The congressional caucus was founded in 2008 in order help US national interests and America’s Kurdish friends in Iraq as well as the Kurdish American community in the US.
The latest situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the Middle East were discussed. President Bafel Jalal Talabani said that conflicts do not serve the interests of any side in the region and all efforts must be directed towards ensuring peace and stability.
On the threat of terrorism, President Bafel said that continued cooperation is the main factor in ensuring peace and security in the region and that it is our collective duty to confront the threats and eradicate terrorism.
He stressed that the success of the talks between Iraq and the United States within the framework of preserving the higher interests is very important and we welcome such successes.
