SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Three Iraqi soldiers including an officer were killed in an explosion in Kirkuk province on Friday (January 1), according to Iraqi media.
Shafaaq News cited a security source as saying that an improvised explosive device hit a Humvee carrying Iraqi soldiers near the villages of al-Zaji and al-Qahara in Daquq district, south of Kirkuk.
An Iraqi officer and two soldiers were killed and another was wounded in the blast, the source added.
The federal government announced victory over Islamic State by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
