Agriculture Minister Praises Local Farmers for Boosting Food Security

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources on Friday expressed her satisfaction with the efforts made by Kurdish farmers, investors, and the Ministry in strengthening food security and promoting agricultural sector development in the Region.

Begard Talabani, the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, specifically commended local farms in Penjwen district, east of Sulaimani province, for these achievements, according to a post to her Facebook account.

Penjwen’s farmers cultivate 1,000 dunams of various crops annually, including potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, and cucumbers, with a particular focus on sweet potatoes, according to the Minister’s words.

Additionally, Talabani added that the Penjwen farmers plant 450 tons of potato seeds each year and have the capacity to produce 3,500 tons of potatoes.

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring food security, supporting local farmers, and facilitating the sale of their products in suitable markets.
