SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq has issued a ruling on Sunday that dismantles all provincial councils operating within the Kurdistan Region, Esta Media Network has learned.

The Federal Supreme today issued a significant ruling that is set to have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of the Kurdistan Region. The ruling pertains to the dismantling of all provincial councils in the Region.

A while back, the New Generation Movement, a self-proclaimed Kurdish opposition party, sued the Kurdish provincial councils for not holding elections and expiring their terms, resulting in the court’s verdict today.

The decision is expected to have a profound impact on the governance structure of the Region as the court issued a similar ruling against the Region’s parliament in May.

Further details regarding the ruling are yet to be released.
