SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Intelligence Service said on Sunday that its forces had detained an Islamic State (ISIS) leader in Kirkuk province.

The intelligence agency said in a statement that its forces had ambushed the senior ISIS member at his house in Shwan district in northeast of Kirkuk.

The detainee “worked as a soldier in the so-called al-Qadisiyah division and the office of research development,” the agency said.

Recently, Iraqi forces have stepped up efforts to detain ISIS militants in the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Nineveh, Anbar and Baghdad. The security forces have detained and killed dozens of ISIS members in the past weeks.

On Saturday, the Iraqi intelligence agency said its forces detained two women over membership to ISIS in Kirkuk.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
