SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The United States on Monday welcomed the recent agreement between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

“U.S. Consulate General – Erbil welcomes #PUK and #KDP agreement on holding IKP elections & support for #Peshmerga unification and reform,” it said.

“We look forward to seeing progress as the two sides come together and negotiate the remaining issues to benefit the people of Iraqi #Kurdistan,” it added.

The Kurdistan Region’s ruling parties, the PUK and the KDP on Sunday met at a high level in the Dabashan area of Sulaimani City.

The two sides agreed on five key points in the latest breakthrough between the rival parties’ relationships, according to a joint statement released after the meeting.

The pair reiterated their commitments to protect the Kurdistan Region’s entity and its constitutional rights, the Region’s parliamentary election on the date decided by the Region’s president, and continue Peshmerga unification.

“We will do our utmost to face the challenges for the sake of the people’s livelihood and resolving the issues,” the statement said.

It further indicated that the PUK and KDP agreed to set aside the “small” differences to further serve the people.

In the meantime, the pair reiterated their support for the deals signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government.

They also said that they will continue their bilateral meetings, including all inter-party meetings with a “patriotic spirit”.
