SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Rights groups and activists are set to hold a protest in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani City on Sunday against the controversial imprisonment of journalist Sherwan Sherwani.

“Defending Sherwani and his colleagues is a defense of freer tomorrow against the oppressions and injustices that had been done against Sherwani,” they said in an announcement.

Well-known Kurdish journalist Sherwani was sentenced to an additional four years in jail following a verdict issued by the court of Erbil on Thursday.

Sherwani was already imprisoned for charges that were widely seen as politically motivated, according to observers and activists.

Rights groups and activists, including political and international organizations strongly denounce the decision against Sherwani and slam the verdict, as well as the Region’s judiciary system for being subjected to political interference.
