SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi protesters gathered at Tahrir Square in Baghdad on early Saturday to denounce the burning of the holy Quran by a right-wing group in Denmark.
The group desecrated the Quran in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen on Friday outside Iraq’s Embassy.
Protesters in Baghdad had reportedly attempted to cross the nearby Jumuhuriya Bridge to proceed toward the Danish Embassy.
Police were prompted to deploy tear gas. Authorities have closed the bridge to traffic after pushing back protesters as a result, thwarting the plan reportedly.
Tensions between Iraq and Denmark could prompt the severing of diplomatic ties.
This comes as Muslims expressed outrage about a similar incident in Sweden, calling on authorities to prevent such hateful acts from repeating.
Iraq on Thursday officially cut diplomatic relations with Sweden after the Swedish authorities gave the green light allowing to burn the Quran by Anti-Islam protesters, which prompted hundreds of protesters to storm and set alight the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.
