SULAIMANI (ESTA) — During the last month, at least 142 prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons. On average, 9 prisoners were executed every two days, which is the highest number of executions in one month in recent years, according to Hangaw Organizations for Human Rights.
“Based on the statistics registered in the Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw, during May 2023, at least 129 prisoners were executed in various Iranian prisons, 37% of which were Baloch and Kurdish prisoners,” it said.
“At least 31 Baloch prisoners, 22 Kurdish prisoners, 9 Turkish prisoners, and 6 Afghan nationals were executed in Iranian prisons in the past month. The identities of 37 prisoners have not been clarified yet,” It added.
The watchdog further added that out of a total of 142 executed prisoners, “6 were executed for political and ideological charges, 83 were for drug-related charges, 47 were for murder charges, 4 were for rape charges, and 2 were for human trafficking and corruption charges.”
“It should be mentioned that in May, the death sentence of a woman in the central prison of Mashhad, as well as the death sentence of a man in public in Maragheh, were carried out”
The most executions were recorded in Kerman prisons with 16 cases, Qezelhesar 14 cases, Rajaie Shahr 14 cases, Isfahan 11 cases, Bandar Abbas 10 cases, Rasht 9 cases, Khorramabad 8 cases, and Sanandaj 6 cases, according to Hangaw.
