Suspected Turkish airstrike targets areas in Nineveh

Smoke rises after Turkish warplanes carry out airstrikes five times in areas around Mzhi village in Duhok province, June 24, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Suspected Turkish airstrike on Saturday targeted areas in Sheikhan district of Nineveh province, Iraqi media reported.

The airstrike has targeted Pekhir Mountain in the province, Shafaq News reported citing a local source as saying.

The airstrike most likely targeted the suspected positions of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) which is an opposition to Ankara and maintains its bases in the region.

The damages and losses of the airstrike are still unknown.

The PKK, which has led an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is considered a “terrorist” organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
