SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The security media cell on Friday announced that the Iraqi forces had found the bodies of five Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Salahadin province.

The militants were found dead as a result of anti-terrorism airstrikes, targeting the terrorists’ position in Wadi al-Azim a night earlier, said a statement from the security media cell.

“The air strikes under field supervision by the Operations Commander, embarked at dawn today [Frdiay] a search Ops to the targeted place, where they found five bodies of ISIS terrorist members and various equipment on the outskirts of Wadi al-Azim”, read the statement.

ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi territory in 2014. While the group has been declared territorially defeated in 2017, it still poses a serious security threat to the country which is capable of carrying out hit-and-run attacks and abductions of locals.

The militants are most active in areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

In late January, at least five alleged ISIS terrorists were arrested by the Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency of Iraq arrested amid an operation in Kirkuk province.
