U.S. Consulate in Kurdistan welcomes PUK-KDP meeting in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The U.S. Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region “welcomes” the meeting between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and rival Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to discuss disagreements.

Officials from the PUK and the KDP met in Sulaimani on Saturday. The meeting came after the disagreements escalated recently.

Earlier, the PUK spokesman, Soran Jamal Tahir said they will discuss the disagreements with the KDP, he said in a press conference.

“The disagreements must be resolved and the previous agreement that had been made to form the Kurdistan Regional Government’s ninth cabinet must be implemented,” he added.

In the meantime, The U.S. consulate General said “We welcome our partners in the KRG taking steps to repair internal relations for the benefit of their people,” it said in a tweet.

“Working together, they can build a more resilient #Iraqi_Kurdistan_Region. A house united shall always prosper,” the tweet added.

Moreover, the PUK spokesman also stated that the PUK governmental team will return to the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers meetings, adding that PUK wants to address the issues with the KDP through dialogue.
